Transcript of the interview of Admiral Robert O. Wellander
John D. Ehrlichman & David R. Young
[Memorandum for the record] with handwritten annotations of Young
Washington, D.C.: The White House, 1971

Jounalist's Note:

In studying the Military Spy Ring this document is the "smoking gun" evidence that it did exist, and was moving against President Nixon through leaks to the press. It is still classified "TOP SECRET" at the National Archives. In the summer of 1986 Mr. Ehrlichman was able to get a copy, legally, from his files at the National Archives. He sent it to me for use in Silent Coup. A copy resides in the files of the late Mr. Ehrlichman. In 1991 we published a clean copy of this transcript in the appendix of Silent Coup.

The document is Admiral Robert O. Welander's confession to having participated in a spy ring of military officers who stole classified documents. I feel this is such an important historical document that I want it published in its "Primary Source" form, especially for researchers, but also for all the other interested parties that visit the "Research Collection on the Nixon Presidency" site.

This is not fiction; it is the real thing.
